{"id":204,"date":"2020-11-12T18:57:35","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T18:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/accessible-design\/?page_id=204"},"modified":"2020-11-19T13:50:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T13:50:52","slug":"adjustable-timing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/accessible-design\/adjustable-timing\/","title":{"rendered":"Adjustable Timing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">When creating web content that is time-based, it is important to make considerations in your design that will allow users with disabilities adequate time to interact with the web content you have published.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">To meet Level A compliance, at least one of the following statements must be true:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Turn Off: The user is given the option to turn off the time limit before encountering it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Adjust: The user is given the option to adjust the time limit (before encountering the content) which is set <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">within a range of at least ten times the length of the default setting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Extend: Before time expires on the content you have created, the user needs to be warned before time expires and given at least 20 seconds to extend the time limit with a simple action. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Real-time Exception: The time limit is a required part of a real-time event which you have set up, (such as a timed event), and no other alternative is available or possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Essential Exception: The time limit is essential in the design and extending it would invalidate the activity which you have created.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">20 Hour Exception: The time limit is longer than 20 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213\" style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-213 \" src=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/accessible-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/467\/2020\/11\/Artboard-1-e1605211720942-300x138.png\" alt=\"A vector image of a computer keyboard zoomed in to focus on the spacebar.\" width=\"645\" height=\"287\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">The spacebar on a keyboard can be used as a hotkey to pause and re-start videos, allowing the user to interrupt the media.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When creating web content that is time-based, it is important to make considerations in your design that will allow users with disabilities adequate time to interact with the web content you have published.
