Rocky Mountain Psychological Association 2025 Convention, Denver, CO, United States.

Abstract:

In a world where we seem to be increasingly divided on political and social issues, what can we do? One option is to devote some time to truly understanding other people’s viewpoints. Not only might this reduce your prejudice toward those people, but it could also help you when talking to or attempting to persuade them. In addition, mindfulness practices, including breathwork, focus-based meditation, and compassion-based meditation, may be helpful. For example, some researchers have explored mindfulness as a possible way to buffer the negative impact of being the target of discrimination, while other researchers have explored mindfulness as a way to stop an individual from stereotyping or discriminating. In this talk, Dr. Ropp will review research in these areas while also giving advice on what to do to 1) understand and talk with others, and 2) attempt to reduce your own level of stereotyping and discrimination.

Selected Invited Talks

Ropp, A.
