{"id":250,"date":"2018-07-27T17:11:03","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T23:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/?page_id=250"},"modified":"2018-09-09T12:14:09","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T18:14:09","slug":"bodies-and-embodiment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/india\/bodies-and-embodiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Bodies and Embodiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The control of bodies is one of the singular most important concepts in terms of thinking about how power works in societies and cultures across the world.\u00a0 This is no less true in the United States than in India.\u00a0 However, India has specific cultural ideals and values that make studying the body in India especially interesting.\u00a0 For instance, India has a long history of Hindu tradition that, according to the version practiced, proscribes the body paradoxically as gift and burden.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordbibliographies.com\/view\/document\/obo-9780195399318\/obo-9780195399318-0154.xml\">Gavin Flood<\/a>, &#8220;The body has been a central concern for Indian religions and philosophies, on the one hand being given a positive evaluation in some traditions as the vehicle of the journey to liberation (Skt. <i>mok\u1e63a<\/i>) or enlightenment (<i>bodha<\/i>), on the other hand being given a negative evaluation in some traditions as a restriction or confinement of the soul from which it must break free.&#8221;\u00a0 For many Hindus, the body is of primary importance for several reasons.\u00a0 One of these is that it represents one&#8217;s past lives, such that their bodily form in the current life is a result of their past lives deeds&#8211;better deeds result in better bodily form and social status.\u00a0 Some believe yoga and meditation will free one from the earthly body, while others believe the body contains the heavens inside.\u00a0 Flood notes, &#8220;Apart from soteriological and ritual concerns, the body has been the focus of medical discourse, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordbibliographies.com\/view\/document\/obo-9780195399318\/obo-9780195399318-0154.xml#obo-9780195399318-0154-div2-0009\">Ayurveda<\/a>, that cannot be separated from general Hindu cosmological and philosophical categories.&#8221;\u00a0 Thus, the body is of central concern when considering Indian practice, values, and beliefs, particularly as these have shifted post-British colonization.<\/p>\n<p>See:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Coakley.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-362\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-362 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Coakley-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Coakley-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Coakley.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Collingham.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-364\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-364 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Collingham-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Collingham-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2018\/09\/Collingham.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taking the importance of the body in India into consideration, I elected to keep a journal of my experience in India.\u00a0 In this journal, I reflect on what it means to have a body, to be embodied, in a space that is deeply complex.\u00a0 India is full of diversity and contradiction.\u00a0 It is the prime space to examine bodies, given the number and importance of them in tradition and contemporary society.\u00a0 This is my experience:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/crossculturalgenderandsexualities\/journal\/\"><strong>JOURNAL 6\/2\/18 &#8211;
