Below are some resources you can provide your students to assist them throughout their academic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduce Test Anxiety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are two types of Test Anxiety:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAnticipatory Anxiety\u201d which is when you feel distress while studying or thinking about the test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSituational Anxiety\u201d which occurs while you are taking the test<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some anxiety is natural, but too much can cause physical distress, emotional upset, and difficulties in concentrating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anxiety occurs in a wave, so it will increase, come to a peak, and then naturally subside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test Anxiety can come from\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fear of not living up to the expectations of important people in your life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Believing grades are an estimation of your personal worth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placing too much emphasis on a single test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving into guilt feelings or anxiety as a result of inadequate preparations for the test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling helpless, believing that you have no control over your performance or grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Short Term Techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tensing &amp; Differential Method\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Push your feet into the floor while pulling up on the underside of the chair you are sitting on. Hold for 5 seconds then release for 5 seconds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palming Method\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rest your palms over your eyes and imagine a relaxing scene<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deep Breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long Term Technique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Negative Self-Talk\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid self-critical or self-deflating talk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid \u201cI can\u2019t do this\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to fail\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not smart enough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive Self-Talk\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use encouraging and empowering statements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say \u201cI am prepared for this\u201d or \u201cI can handle challenges\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ll do my best\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div>\n\t<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#dadadd;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#f4f4f7;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<h2>Conversation Starters<\/h2>\n<p>Use the following prompts to start a conversation with your learner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On a scale of 1 to 5, how would you say your studying methods are going for you (1 being, \u201cNot very well \u2013 I\u2019m studying but not understanding the material.\u201d and 5 being \u201cGreat \u2013 when I sit down to study, I am truly learning this material!\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel you\u2019re using your time outside of class to study?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s wrap up Module 4 next!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/familyandsupport1010\/module-4\/understanding-and-navigating-the-hidden-curriculum\/academic-resources-at-msu-denver\/comparing-high-school-and-college\/study-tips-and-tricks\/module-4-conclusion\/\">Next: Module 4 Conclusion<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes as family members and supporters we may not know where to begin with guiding our students when they are struggling academically.
