A. Muscle twitch<\/strong>(100msec)<\/p>\n

1. Latent period<\/strong>(10 msec)<\/p>\n

Excitation-contraction coupling<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Contraction period<\/strong>(40msec)<\/p>\n

Tension\/shortening<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Relaxation period<\/strong>(50msec)<\/p>\n

Returns to unstimulated tension\/length<\/em><\/p>\n

B. Graded contraction<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0All or none response<\/p>\n

Refers to the myofiber<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Multiple motor unit summation = Spatial<\/p>\n

Individual motor units combine their activities to increase the contraction of the entire muscle.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Muscle tone<\/p>\n

At any given time, some fibers are contracted which tightens muscle, but not enough to produce movement<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Wave summation = Temporal<\/strong><\/p>\n

Summation in time, before complete relaxation<\/em><\/p>\n

a. Incomplete tetanus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Contraction strength increases in amplitude with partial relaxation<\/em><\/p>\n

b. Complete tetanus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sustained contraction.<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Asynchronous motor unit summation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Different motor units are activated at different times<\/em><\/p>\n

6. Treppe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stronger contractions after muscle has contracted several times. “Staircase” phenomenon<\/em><\/p>\n

7. Isotonic & Isometric contractions<\/p>\n

Isotonic<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– tension develops and it shortens<\/em><\/p>\n

Isometric<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– tension develops and it doesn’t shorten<\/em><\/p>\n
