{"id":2684,"date":"2020-08-31T15:33:19","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T15:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/haysc\/?page_id=2684"},"modified":"2021-03-19T14:24:24","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T14:24:24","slug":"specific-learning-objectives-job-description-skills-development","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/haysc\/biology-courses\/syllabus-bio-398-exempla-at-lutheran-medical-center-internship\/specific-learning-objectives-job-description-skills-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Specific Learning Objectives; Job Description; Skills Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>MedVantage Internship at SCL Health Lutheran Medical Center<\/h2>\n<h2><strong>SPECIFIC (MEASURABLE) STUDENT BEHAVIORAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Upon completion of the floor duties and various rotations in their volunteer position at SCL Health Lutheran Medical Center, the student will learn:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency Department<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>An understanding of patient flow in the patient care spectrum.<\/li>\n<li>An insight for universal precautions.<\/li>\n<li>To apply book learning to the real world patient setting.<\/li>\n<li>To interpret how one patient may communicate an illness differently than another.<\/li>\n<li>To observe minor medical processes and procedures to patients and to relate the process and procedure to normal anatomy and physiology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Inpatient floors<\/strong> &#8211; including Oncology\/Hospice, Respiratory, Surgical and Telemetry Units, if available.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To identify specific precipitating health risk factors that contribute to the disease processes primarily treated on the specific units.<\/li>\n<li>To understand that a patients health is more than just physical.<\/li>\n<li>To analyze medical terminology and learn new terminology through independent research.<\/li>\n<li>To observe the operation of some medical equipment and understand the use in patient care.<\/li>\n<li>To discern proper body mechanics.<\/li>\n<li>To analyze food and fluid intake and elimination based on the patient\u2019s illness through observation and research.<\/li>\n<li>To perform as a team with other health care professionals in the total spectrum of patient care.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Cadaver Laboratory<\/strong> (if available)<\/p>\n<p>1. To correlate structure and function of the human body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surgical Department<\/strong> (if available)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 To maintain a sterile environment in the operating room.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 An understanding of the particular surgery being viewed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency Department Physician Shadowing (If available)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To examine the thought processes which go into making a medical diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>To comprehend the steps of wound management.<\/li>\n<li>To understand the identification of an ill versus healthy person.<\/li>\n<li>Skills necessary to understanding and being an asset to the operations of the emergency room.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Other Departments depending on need and interest<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Anatomy and Physiology that is reviewed when observing complete physical examinations.<\/li>\n<li>An insight that a person\u2019s well being is not just centered on physical health.<\/li>\n<li>To compare a nurse practitioner\u2019s medical philosophy to that of a physicians philosophy.<\/li>\n<li>To understand and analyze the physiology and medical practice differences among children, adults, and neonates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>JOB DESCRIPTION and RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Hands on and shadowing experiences on a medical floor.<\/li>\n<li>Observation rotation in cadaver lab, ER, surgery and off-site clinic as available.<\/li>\n<li>Perform and interpret minor routine laboratory tests.<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring and reporting patient&#8217;s heart rhythms.<\/li>\n<li>Various other monitoring and volunteer services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>SKILLS DEVELOPMENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1.Specific competencies\/skills\/knowledge to be developed on this job:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li>Complete physical examination procedures through observation.<\/li>\n<li>Clinical isolation techniques through observation.<\/li>\n<li>Surgical procedures through observations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>2.
