Any others hours I have available can be used for <strong>office hours by appointment<\/strong>. Please do not hesitate to contact me by email or in person if you would like to schedule office hours by appointment. Feel free to suggest a meeting time that is convenient for you, but please allow me at least 24 hours advanced notice before any proposed meeting time. <strong>Taking advantage of your instructor\u2019s office hours is a critical component of your university education. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Distraction-Free Classroom Statement:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 An utmost priority in my classroom is to maintain a <strong>distraction-free classroom. <\/strong>The following items are common classroom distractions we <strong>need to avoid<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use of <strong>smart phones <\/strong>or other <strong>portable electronic devices <\/strong>during class or leaving the classroom at inappropriate times to use these devices. Please turn your <strong>phone<\/strong> or <strong>portable electronic device <u>OFF<\/u> <\/strong>during class and put away your <strong>headphones<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Arriving at class late (or leaving early) for avoidable circumstances and failing to enter (or leave) the classroom discretely for unavoidable circumstances.<\/li>\n<li>Attending class unprepared. We will often do activities that require a <strong>calculator, notepad <\/strong>and<strong> writing utensil<\/strong>. I expect students to have these items ready to use during our entire class session.<\/li>\n<li>Socializing that is not related to course content. Lecture will not be our only activity and socializing is acceptable during some classroom activities but discussing topics not related to our classroom activities is not allowed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Text:<\/u>\u00a0 <\/strong><em>Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences<\/em>, by Jay L. Devore, 9th Edition, Cengage Learning, 2016. ISBN-13: 978-1305251809, ISBN-10: 9781305251809<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Software and Calculator<\/u><\/strong><u>:<\/u>\u00a0 <u>A graphing calculator that does two-variable<\/u> <u>statistics is required.\u00a0 You cannot use a smartphone as a calculator.<\/u>\u00a0 The TI-83 and TI-86 from <em>Texas Instruments<\/em> are good options.\u00a0 Also we will be doing projects in r which is freely available and on the lab computers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Exams<\/u><\/strong><u>:<\/u>\u00a0 There will be three regular exams worth 100 points each. if your highest exam grade will replace your lowest. If you are happy with your existing exam scores and complete all of the home work, the final is optional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Homework:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 Homework will be assigned regularly.\u00a0 Homework is due at the <u>beginning<\/u> of class; selected problems from these assignments will be graded for correctness and the whole assignment is graded for completeness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Late homework will not be accepted,<\/strong> but your <strong>2 lowest homework grades will be dropped<\/strong> from your final homework grade.\u00a0 <strong>Please save these homework drops for emergency absences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due dates for homework will always be posted on the course website and announced in class when the homework is assigned.\u00a0 The assignments should be <u>neatly<\/u> <u>written<\/u> and multiple pages must be <u>stapled<\/u> together.\u00a0 The percentage of available points you earn after your lowest two homework grade will be your final homework grade (out of 100).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Projects:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 Five statistics projects that require the use of statistics software worth 20 points each will be assigned.\u00a0 These projects will illustrate the use of software in an applied statistics setting. These projects are optional and will be included in the grade only if you opt in.
