BGS – Home

Welcome to the 50th Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium!

Historical Context

  • The 50th Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium (BGS) will provide a perspective of geomorphology from its historical past to potential advancements in the future. The BGS: 50 years of enhancing geomorphology will have six main themes based on the foundation of topics presented at the previous symposia. Themes include:
    • Forces 1 – Glacial, fluvial, and Periglacial;
    • Forces 2 – Tectonics and Gravity;
    • Biogeomorphology and Soils;
    • Concepts and Paradigms;
    • Anthropogenic influences; and
    • Applications.
  • Each theme will have an introductory perspective talk and will provide a perspective of how the BGS has advanced the research frontier. This will be followed by several presentations that will focus on the present and future state of research related to the BCS themes.
  • The format of the BGS is simple. Day 1 consists of an optional field trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, followed by an evening ice-breaker networking event. Day 2 consists of one main session (no concurrent presentations), followed by lunchtime and evening poster presentation sessions, culminating in a dinner function with a keynote address given by Vic Baker. Day 3 resumes with invited speaker presentations, ending by mid-day to allow travel on Sunday afternoon. Most meals, drinks, and snacks are included in the Registration fee.

Diversity and Inclusion

  • The Binghamton Symposium (BGS) steering committee affirms its belief and commitment to diversity and inclusion.  Diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision-making and leadership. Enhancing diversity, promoting inclusion, and broadening participation in the discipline of geomorphology are goals that are central to the BGS.  The BGS steering committee is actively engaging in outreach and research activities to attract and recruit diverse scholars in the discipline.
