Although this teaching module is designed to guide students to be sensitive towards their roles as guests in a foreign culture this article raises fundamental questions about human beings’ abilities to truly relate to someone who is different from us (or any “other”, for that matter). Of interest to us is Taylor’s highlighting of Paul Ricoeur’s idea that the challenges inherent in the encounter with the stranger can be better understood if one compares them to the challenges encountered by the translator rendering a text from one language into another. In both cases compromises are required, as it the willingness to accept that the translation and the hospitality will never be perfect. We will never be the perfect guests in the places that welcome us. The intellectual awareness raised in this article about the elements that separate strangers who become host and guest is just one more approach to be considered when offering tools to students developing cross cultural competency.

http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/hosting-the-stranger-between-religions-9781441158086/

Teacher Prep 4.1 An excellent article on hospitality in the commercial sector D.
