{"id":1,"date":"2020-02-24T23:05:13","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T23:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/niemeye1\/?p=1"},"modified":"2020-03-18T05:26:28","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T05:26:28","slug":"chose_msu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/niemeye1\/2020\/02\/24\/chose_msu\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I chose MSU Denver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">As my brief bio in the &#8220;About me&#8221; section indicates, I have recently moved to MSU Denver.\u00a0 On this site, I&#8217;ll be blogging about my research, teaching, service and mentoring.\u00a0 But it is here where I want to emphasize one thing about MSU Denver:<i> there truly are some world-class, internationally renowned faculty working for the betterment of our students and their own fields of interest<\/i>.\u00a0 I am lucky to count myself among them and to have the chance to mentor excellent and motivated students coming from a variety of tremendously diverse backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">What prompted this initial post was a comment from a student today: \u201cWhy are you not at Boulder or DU?\u201d My answer to this question was simply \u201cbecause those places aren&#8217;t for me.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I care too much about helping students like me: first generation, without strong mentorship or direction and perhaps unaware of the many opportunities that lie beyond.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I took a somewhat windy path in my education, and I\u2019m better for it, but not everyone is as stubborn as I was (am?).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I succeeded for a variety of reasons, but my main goal in teaching is to help others get to their finish line faster.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I could apply to teach at a university with a lower teaching load.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I could also be a lot richer working in finance or something more lucrative than teaching, but I wouldn\u2019t have any sense of fulfillment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">MSU Denver is a place that reflects my own ethos and supports me in helping students as much as it supports students who need the help.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What I want every person reading this entry to take away is that MSU Denver isn\u2019t a place with a \u2018big name.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a place with a big heart.
