{"id":134,"date":"2022-12-12T22:09:50","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T22:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/?page_id=134"},"modified":"2022-12-12T22:09:50","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T22:09:50","slug":"reborn","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/issue-4\/reborn\/","title":{"rendered":"Reborn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">by Mohammed Ahmad<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joseph, Usife,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">Which name should I choose?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201cDon\u2019t you say Usife, or you\u2019ll leave them confused\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">Said grandma starkly, crouched up with amuse,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201cRemember they don\u2019t like you!\u201d <\/em>She sneered, chugging her plastic juice<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">leaving the bottle bruised, I watched her nervously,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the sun laid back at the dinner table of blues,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">Fine China filled up with kisses and achoos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The violet sky swallowed black,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">Crickets drowned by yesterday&#8217;s news,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aunts and Uncles sneering and gocking at the name that I use,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u201cWhich name?\u201d<\/em> They asked, as I answered back unamused.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201cJoseph fits you better, Usife won\u2019t land an interview!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">I gave a broken smile, then peered upon a French painting, decorated with a naked angel<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dancing pretty and fainting, I saw a tiny squiggle of a name I knew,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">Squinted my eyes to see \u201cYassir Yosef\u201d written in baby blue,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">They said I\u2019d always be backwards in their eyes, embedded with rue<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">An Ishmaelite, that Canaanite, this Arab,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I sat there smiling, squinting, blushed and kissed, like that very Boucher Cherub.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mohammed Ahmad is a Palestinian actor and writer from Colorado.
