If we leave before dawn,<\/p>\n
we can reach the road in time<\/p>\n
to catch the sun lifting the<\/p>\n
veils of blurred horizons,<\/p>\n
lighting the world in shades<\/p>\n
of cornflower blue.<\/p>\n

Here,<\/p>\n
in the quiet of ourselves,<\/p>\n
we will crane our necks from<\/p>\n
the west and learn to notice<\/p>\n
what lies beyond the checkered<\/p>\n
lines of the interstate, the humdrum<\/p>\n
of overnight trucks bound<\/p>\n
for New Mexico, the sting of<\/p>\n
words we should have left unsaid.<\/p>\n

I will drive, and you,<\/p>\n
bare feet smudging the windowpane,<\/p>\n
will feign indifference but feel<\/p>\n
yourself softening. Here,<\/p>\n
the sun will peek over fields<\/p>\n
of drought-dead cotton, filter<\/p>\n
through tinted glass and dark<\/p>\n
corners we kept to ourselves \u2014<\/p>\n
and by then, when we search for<\/p>\n
the space where earth dissolves to sky,<\/p>\n
we will lose the dividing line.<\/p>\n

Here,<\/p>\n
maybe we will find something<\/p>\n
more than a half-hearted apology,<\/p>\n
a quick fix, a make-up kiss<\/p>\n
we only mean in the morning.<\/p>\n

Maybe we will find<\/p>\n
some version of each other<\/p>\n
we can still love in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
