{"id":258,"date":"2024-12-10T22:40:16","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T22:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/?page_id=258"},"modified":"2024-12-11T01:29:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T01:29:32","slug":"reading","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/issue-7\/reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">by Jacob Friesenhahn<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His hair shines black<br \/>\nthrough blonde highlights.<br \/>\nHe is slight of build<br \/>\nbut suddenly muscular<br \/>\nwhen the angle is right.<br \/>\nIf he smiles, life loves me after all.<br \/>\nIf he scowls, I have no chance.<\/p>\n<p>His brown hands wave above<br \/>\nthe deck with what I admit is grace.<br \/>\nHis painted nails flash blue to black<br \/>\nand back.<br \/>\nHis hands appear soft<br \/>\nso long as they hover<br \/>\nbut grow hard every time<br \/>\nthey touch a card.<br \/>\nHe speaks of life as one outside,<br \/>\nof death as one immune:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive yourself to the wind,<br \/>\nas leaves, as seeds,<br \/>\nuncaring where they land.<br \/>\nWalk not alone but apart,<br \/>\na hermit born of moonlit hunger,<br \/>\na fool chasing the sky, already<br \/>\nfull of the vastness inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet go of relics buried under earth;<br \/>\nthey are not yours and never were.<br \/>\nLeave this life behind, a forest<br \/>\non fire, burning itself into dust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight, watch as the stars blink<br \/>\njust for you, and the tress bow<br \/>\ndown as you pass, casting shadows<br \/>\nthat ripple like dripping black ink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeed only on what you cannot<br \/>\nname; let it warm you like milk<br \/>\nand honey, for when you arrive,<br \/>\nyou shall know: the earth will<br \/>\ncradle you as she did before,<br \/>\nand your roots will discover<br \/>\nmoist dark ground once more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jacob Friesenhahn teaches religious studies and philosophy at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.
