That its<br \/>\nsong is different when it flies, more urgent,<br \/>\nlike when you run.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  <em>You need not know<\/em><br \/>\n<em>if it is a cowbird or a warbler or a blue jay,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>although, come to think of it, you know<\/em><br \/>\n<em>it is not a blue jay.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  That it lays eggs<br \/>\nin some sort of nest and that these eggs<br \/>\nhatch baby birds in kind. That these<br \/>\nbabies will fly in just a few short weeks.<br \/>\nThat they, too, will sing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  <em>All of this<\/em><br \/>\n<em>without a name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  That it has feathers,<br \/>\none of which you may have picked up<br \/>\non a wooded walk to admire the vibrant<br \/>\ncolors or the gently patterned brown.<br \/>\nThat it, like you, avoids the rain.<br \/>\nThat it, like you, goes out each day<br \/>\nin search of food. That it is unburdened<br \/>\nfrom a job, but fills the time just fine.<\/p>\n<p>And when you discover that its name<br \/>\nis Carolina Chickadee, or Yellow-throated Vireo,<br \/>\nor White-breasted Nuthatch, when you learn<br \/>\nthat it will perch on reeds along the pond<br \/>\nand nest in tree hollows and birdhouses,<br \/>\nthat some believe it mates for life,<br \/>\nthis cannot take away any of your<br \/>\nmore basic knowledge, only making plain<br \/>\nfor those who are listening,<br \/>\nthat you are talking about a dear friend<br \/>\nwhose voice you&#8217;ve always admired.<br \/>\n&nbsp; <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Paul Ragonese is an MFA student at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX.
