{"id":292,"date":"2025-12-01T20:39:40","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T20:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/?page_id=292"},"modified":"2025-12-05T16:48:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T16:48:18","slug":"humilis-humus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/issue-8\/humilis-humus\/","title":{"rendered":"Humilis, Humus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">by Laura Hatch<\/p>\n<p>When the day is getting done,<br \/>\nnot dark yet but<br \/>\nnearly there, when the end<br \/>\nhas crept upon me<br \/>\nlike meadow grass<br \/>\nthreaded through<br \/>\nthe fence line, and the earth<br \/>\ndesires to take me,<br \/>\nroots eager to reclaim<br \/>\nthese bones, a hungry<br \/>\naffair, thistles and<br \/>\nnettles tangled<br \/>\nin my hair,<\/p>\n<p>when I cross my wrists<br \/>\nover my heart and lay<br \/>\nthis body down,<br \/>\nwhen I slip<br \/>\nmy last wisp of breath<br \/>\nand unburden<br \/>\nthis blanket of skin,<br \/>\neach hair, each freckle<br \/>\nand knuckle dropping<br \/>\nto the ground,<br \/>\nno need to argue<br \/>\nnow,<\/p>\n<p>when I give my body<br \/>\nto the earth without<br \/>\ncomplaint and when, with<br \/>\nno hands to hold them,<br \/>\nI ask for an armful<br \/>\nof flowers\u2014<br \/>\nyarrow and zinnia,<br \/>\naster, lupine, columbine\u2014<br \/>\nthe morning glory will weave<br \/>\nme together, sepals for<br \/>\njoints, stamens for eyelashes,<br \/>\nblooms like a crown.<br \/>\nIn the loam<br \/>\nwill I abound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laura Hatch is an MFA Candidate at Texas State University, where she teaches Composition.
