{"id":294,"date":"2025-12-01T20:40:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T20:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/?page_id=294"},"modified":"2025-12-06T17:59:31","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T17:59:31","slug":"at-the-beginning-of-knowing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/issue-8\/at-the-beginning-of-knowing\/","title":{"rendered":"At the Beginning of Knowing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">by Laura Ann Reed<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;after Joanna Klink<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Woken again,<br \/>\nthis time by the woodpecker\u2019s beak<br \/>\nbattering the glass, repelling the feathered reflection.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; So, is this what it means<br \/>\nto grow old\u2014to watch a bird in November,<br \/>\nto trace in memory<br \/>\nthe carmine clouds over a lake,<br \/>\nthe quivering iridescence of a fish the child I was<br \/>\nnever meant to catch, its tailfin slipping back<br \/>\ninto the water\u2019s accurate patterns.<br \/>\nAnd the people I\u2019ve met\u2014vivid and willful,<br \/>\nwith a mesmeric force that drew me<br \/>\nto them as into a field of wind,<br \/>\nnow like the sheen at dusk above the horizon,<br \/>\ndim and distant.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; What does it matter, this waking<br \/>\nand mingling when even things in the immediate past\u2014<br \/>\nthe faces seen, the meanings made\u2014 resist fixity?<br \/>\nAnd yet, those friends and strangers, weren\u2019t you<br \/>\nmore of you with them than alone?<br \/>\nDidn\u2019t they keep you from congealing<br \/>\ninto a sorry fistful of needs?<br \/>\nToday, I think of my father, who<br \/>\nat eighty-six wanted only to die and couldn\u2019t.<br \/>\nAnd of my mother, who at ninety-nine wanted<br \/>\nonly to go on painting and couldn\u2019t,<br \/>\nher polio-stricken hands no longer doing her bidding.<br \/>\nI feel at the end of a certain way of being<br \/>\nin relation to them.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Where can I turn<br \/>\nthat is not some kind of ending? I trust,<br \/>\nsomewhat, in the lichen that clings to the bifurcated<br \/>\ntrunk of the cypress, the screech of the barn owl<br \/>\nthat lives in the pines behind my house,<br \/>\nthe clink of my husband\u2019s teacup on the saucer.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The world once seemed<br \/>\nwoven of my own vexation. Now,<br \/>\non another imperfect day, I am less of a weather event<br \/>\nthan I once was, and more spirit\u2014 gathering myself<br \/>\ninto some vaster time in which a green-stemmed seedling<br \/>\nstirs under the razed and blackened dirt years after<br \/>\nthe conflagration in the hills.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Laura Ann Reed is the author of the chapbook <em>Homage to Kafka<\/em> (Poetry Box, 2025).
