{"id":97,"date":"2022-05-09T04:30:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T04:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/?page_id=97"},"modified":"2022-05-09T14:59:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T14:59:00","slug":"the-oak-tree","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/roadrunnerreview\/issue-3\/the-oak-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"The Oak Tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">by Tamesha Morris<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I once sat under an oak tree,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">where many of my ancestors were hung and set free,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">our Amerikkka, I don\u2019t understand, equal rights for a Black man,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">not in the land of red, white, and blue,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">a nation riddled with chaos but never the truth,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0destined to fall beneath its means,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0to be rendered useless,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">to endlessly scream,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">plunging into the depths of darkness,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">disregarding our chances to live,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">to constantly take but never to give,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">blessed with the gift of being Black and free,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0while still fighting stereotypes of inferiority,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0struggling to ignore my ancestors\u2019 cries,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">erasing the looks of terror in their eyes,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">remembering promises never to come,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0Amerikkka\u2019s reign has just begun,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">time for murder and madness and sinister thoughts,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">time for rapes and robberies and innocence lost,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">time for anger and vengeance to creep through the night,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">time for greed and envy causing massive plight,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">we\u2019ve accomplished so much,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">but in contrast so less,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">and we\u2019re fastly approaching the ultimate test,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0of using courage and honor to restore peace on Earth,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">while stopping the violence and ending the hurt,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I can hear voices screaming \u201cgo back where you came from,\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0but whose land did you land on,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">oh, say can you see,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">in my eyes, I see the end of mankind,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0creeping up in disguise and catching us by surprise,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">and the home of the brave,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0that was back in the day,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">before we walked astray and integrity paved the way,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">we\u2019re all Gods placed here for a purpose,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0and conversing with me merely scratches the surface,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">how can you judge when you don\u2019t know,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">how can you help this nation grow,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0do you have the strength to go the extra mile,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0to keep the faith in the eyes of the Black child?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">would you rather die for a cause,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">or die because you paused?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">in mid-decision over right and wrong,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">and oops! you took too long,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">you sat idly by and watched Amerikkka stumble,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">and you in the end were the one in trouble,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">can you lay to rest prejudices and ill-will towards man,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">can you persevere in your struggles to execute positive plans,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">what have you done to lend a helping hand,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">are you causing us to fall,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">or aiding in our stand,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">throughout the brutal and endless ride,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">we\u2019ve still managed to keep our strong, Black pride,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">to hold our heads high and weather each storm,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">but without the aid of others our nation is forever torn,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">between good and evil and self-destruction,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0how can we fight to end this corruption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Oh! Remember that oak tree that caused so much pain?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">It was tormented by thunder then raped by the rain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Finally, a positive change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>My name is Tamesha Morris, and I&#8217;m a senior at MSU Denver with a major in English and a minor in Africana studies. My future plans include both screen and songwriting. I&#8217;ve been writing poetry since middle school and consider it my super power.
