processors rather than a gateway to infinite amounts of information<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">Now technology and the internet ha<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">ve<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span different ways to teach, including online\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">education<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">H<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">igher education\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">and K -12 settings are both seeing a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0sharp increase in\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">the adoption of online\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">courses<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">Ac<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">cording to a new more than a quarter (29.7 percent) of all higher education enrollments that year<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u202f<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0With\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">an increase in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0online classes being offered, more students are enrolling in these courses<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">, but not all of them will be comfortable or familiar with the learning management system\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">used here<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0at MSU\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">Denver<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0 Blackboard<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">\u00a0Learn<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW196009887\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW196009887\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW196009887\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Take a SIP of This: Creating Comfortable Relationships with Blackboard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The first step to helping your students develop a comfortable relationship with Blackboard is\u00a0to\u00a0understand or experience\u00a0online instruction from a student&#8217;s\u00a0point of view.\u00a0\u00a0Most of us have probably taught an online course, but few of us have\u00a0actually taken\u00a0a course online.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When you\u00a0teach an online course, you become intimately familiar with the layout.\u00a0 You know where everything is and how to access it.\u00a0 The class makes perfect sense to you. However, for an\u00a0outsider,\u00a0your course may appear to be\u00a0a complicated\u00a0and\u00a0irregular network of passages\u00a0that\u00a0is difficult\u00a0to understand and navigate.\u00a0\u00a0For this reason, it\u00a0is a\u00a0good idea to take an online course\u00a0(and get those professional development bonus points!)\u00a0or at the very least, look at some of your\u00a0colleagues\u2019\u00a0courses.\u00a0 This will give you a sense of what it is like to try to navigate unfamiliar\u00a0layouts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Other suggestions for helping students become more comfortable:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Make sure students know they\u2019re enrolled in an online or hybrid class and will be using Blackboard as the main medium for learning.<\/b>\u00a0 Some students might miss this bit of detail when they enroll in the course.\u00a0 If possible, email students the course syllabus before the semester begins including a description of the course, hybrid dates (if the course is hybrid) and a list of prerequisite skills necessary to be successful online. The Educational Technology Center provides online learning and technology skills\u00a0self assessments\u00a0as well as an overview\u00a0of many of the skills and resources it takes to be a successful online learner\u00a0(see this link:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msudenver.edu\/online\/about\/\">Online Courses<\/a>\u00a0).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Reinforce<\/b><b>\u00a0that online classes take work<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Some students take online classes because they think it will be easy.\u00a0 This is rarely the\u00a0case, and\u00a0students might not realize this\u00a0until a few weeks into the semester.\u00a0 Emphasize to students early on that\u00a0taking an online course means\u00a0having strong time management skills and self-discipline.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Let them know when the course site will be available<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Your students\u202f<i>will\u202f<\/i>worry that they\u2019re missing something if they don\u2019t see the course site in the learning management system. Let them know when it will be available.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Let students know where to go for help<\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Make sure that\u00a0links to\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0Help, IT Support and other relevant campus resources are\u00a0easily accessible to students.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Be present<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Be available via email, phone, chat or instant messenger.\u00a0\u00a0However,\u00a0this\u00a0doesn&#8217;t mean that you need to be available 24\/7.\u00a0 Include a statement in your\u00a0syllabus\u00a0or\u00a0on the &#8220;Your Professor&#8221; page explaining the days and times you are available online or via email, as well as\u00a0a comment about when students can expect to receive an email\u00a0response from you (generally, within a\u00a048-72 hour\u00a0timeframe).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Also\u00a0remind\u00a0students\u00a0that\u00a0they can come to your face-to-face office hours if they are on campus.\u00a0 Some online students\u00a0think that they cannot meet with their instructor in person because the class is\u00a0online.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The new MSU Denver phone system allows instructors to receive phone calls\u00a0from their office numbers via their computers at home (if you have Skype for Business\u00a0installed on your home computer).\u00a0\u00a0If\u00a0you are not keen on giving out your\u00a0home or cell phone numbers,\u00a0students can call your office number\u00a0and\u00a0talk with you\u00a0when you are not on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Be compassionate<\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Understand that everyone has different levels of comfort with technology.\u00a0\u00a0What may be very\u00a0simple for you, may not be simple to some of your students (such as attaching a word document to an internal email via Blackboard).\u00a0\u00a0Adult learners may not be comfortable with the technology required for the course, certainly if they are returning to complete a degree after\u00a0a number of\u00a0years in the workforce.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Provide timely feedback on assignments, quizzes, and exams<\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>If you expect students to meet assignment due dates and take quizzes during a specific\u00a0time frame,\u00a0then\u00a0return the courtesy by grading and providing feedback sooner than later.\u00a0\u00a0The general recommendation is to\u00a0grade assignments within one week of the due date.\u00a0\u00a0Make sure that students\u00a0know\u00a0where to check their grades\u00a0via Blackboard.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Create a weekly\u00a0<\/b><b>routine<\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Either through\u00a0announcements\u00a0or class emails, provide students with weekly communications that recap the previous week\u2019s activities and\u00a0prepare\u00a0students for the following week.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><b>Design an organized course<\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0If you\u2019ve been tasked with creating an online course, seek out help.\u00a0 The Educational Technology Center
