{"id":355,"date":"2015-08-25T15:26:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T21:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/sips\/?p=355"},"modified":"2019-09-10T18:47:51","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T00:47:51","slug":"sip-2-2-accessible-documents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/sips\/sip-2-2-accessible-documents\/","title":{"rendered":"SIP 2.2 Accessible Documents"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/consumerreports.org\/content\/dam\/cro\/news_articles\/money\/money_200432743-001_dorm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/consumerreports.org\/content\/dam\/cro\/news_articles\/money\/money_200432743-001_dorm.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of female college student reading from a computer with headphones on\" width=\"240\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Thirsty for Strong Instructional Practice?<\/h2>\n<p>The growth in online enrollments is now outpacing the growth of traditional enrollments.\u00a0 The 2013 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group reveals that the number of higher education students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 7.1 million (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlinelearningsurvey.com\/highered.html\">http:\/\/www.onlinelearningsurvey.com\/highered.html<\/a>).\u00a0 With the advent of online instruction at the postsecondary level, people with different levels of ability are taking online courses.\u00a0 All online courses should be designed from the beginning with accessibility in mind.<\/p>\n<h2>Take a SIP of This: Accessible Documents<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft PowerPoint is not always accessible, especially for individuals using text-to-speech software.\u00a0\u00a0 Many researchers recommend encoding all information into HTML format, which is more accessible.\u00a0\u00a0 However, not everyone can do this.\u00a0 An alternative is to convert the information into MS Word.\u00a0 If your PowerPoint contains visual information be sure to add descriptors.<\/li>\n<li>Scanned documents must be run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.\u00a0 OCR is the translation of scanned images of text to the text itself.\u00a0 By applying OCR to a PDF, we take the image of the text and make it searchable, editable, compatible, and accessible to people who use text-to-speech devices.\u00a0 Adobe Pro has this capability (the free version does not). However, faculty members at MSU Denver can request Adobe Pro be installed on their office computers for free.\u00a0 Documents that run through OCR software are cleaner and easier to read for everyone.\u00a0\u00a0 For more information see this site:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/us\/en\/how-to\/ocr-software-convert-pdf-to-text.html\">https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/us\/en\/how-to\/ocr-software-convert-pdf-to-text.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Remember that all video and audio must be captioned.\u00a0 The Educational Technology Center on campus will arrange for any videos (even YouTube videos) and audio files to be captioned.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition, if important information cannot be gleaned by just listening to the sound, audio descriptions will need to be added.\u00a0 Videos with flashing lights, rapid movement can be problematic for those with epilepsy.\u00a0 For more information and assistance with adapting video and audio to meet the needs of your students, please see the Educational Technology Center website:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msudenver.edu\/etc\/\">https:\/\/www.msudenver.edu\/etc\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you are using chatrooms in your course, using a moderator can slow down the generally rapid pace.\u00a0 Another option is to provide transcripts for students who may not be able to participate due to a disability, or use the Forum Discussion option instead of chatrooms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Still Thirsty?
