Their plan is further this mission by developing an Ambassador program through a year-long online professional development experience for 15 teachers from across Nevada. The cohort will have a variety of experiences centered around primary sources including guest speakers, book studies, curriculum development and testing, coaching, and most notably the implementation of either a National History Day, or We The People unit in their classroom (NCCE is the Nevada coordinator for both programs). At the completion of this project this group will become NCCE ambassadors and will help share what they’ve learned with their peers and networks.

Nevada Department of Education
Contact: Christine Hull – Social Studies/Content Literacy Programs Professional
Email: chull@doe.nv.gov
Website: http://www.doe.nv.gov

Grant awarded April 26, 2013

The Nevada Department of Education and the Northern Nevada Writing Project joined forces to implement the project “Writing with Primary Sources in Social Studies Classrooms” through a TPS Western Region grant. This grant served public school districts and public charter schools throughout the state of Nevada. The grant focused on content area literacy with an emphasis on content area writing in social studies. The Nevada Department of Education collaborated with three institutes of higher education, three regional professional development centers, and three regional writing projects to reach social studies educators throughout the state. Grant activities included two-day summer institutes in Reno and Las Vegas and a fall institute in Elko. This project created a leadership cadre of Social Studies teachers across the state who are skilled in using primary sources to develop students’ writing, reading, speaking and listening skills, according to Common Core State Standards.

Western History Association
Contact: Dr. Brian Collier and Lindsey Passenger‌
Email: brian.s.collier@gmail.com; lpassenger@gmail.com
Website: https://westernhistoryassociation.wildapricot.org/

Grant awarded May 11, 2010

Building on the successful collaboration between the TPS Western Region and the Western History Association (WHA) in 2009, the funding from this WHA grant was used to organize and implement a workshop for social studies teachers and methods instructors from nine western states. Participants from un-served states were encouraged to write and submit a grant to the TPS Western Region. The TPS workshop was held in conjunction with the Western History Association Conference on October 12-13, 2010 in Lake Tahoe, NV. Nine educators from the western region attended. Planning and recruiting for WHA Conference included 10,000 fliers sent out to western region universities and K-12 schools. One of the most successful outcomes was a TPS regional grant submitted by the Montana Historical Society and funded in January 2011.

Grant awarded March 9, 2009

The funding from the initial WHA grant was used to organize and implement a two-day workshop for social studies teachers and university faculty in the Western region. This regional TPS conference was held in Denver on October 10-11, 2009 in conjunction with the Western History Association (WHA). Eighteen participants attended, including methods instructors and social studies teachers from eight western states. As follow-up, each participant was required to make at least one TPS presentation to a professional association. Presentations included: a North Dakota presentation made by Dr. Cindy Culver Prescott on April 30, 2010 to seven teachers at the ND Reading Association Conference and an Alaska presentation made by Susan Criner and Becky James (via webinar) on May 7, 2010 to a group of 30 teachers of gifted students in the Anchorage School District. (Also see additional training listed under the Arizona Department of Education grant including presentations by Sarah Young and Linda Sargent-Wood). Primary grant activity was completed as of October 30, 2009 with follow-up TPS presentations completed in 2010.

Nevada Center for Civic Engagement Contact: Christine Hull Email: chull@nvcce.org Website: https://nvcce.org Grant awarded 4/15/2021 The NCCE’s Mission is to promote and support the study of history, law and civics for the development of responsible and informed citizens who are committed to democratic principles and active engagement in representative government.
