{"id":315,"date":"2021-05-12T14:33:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T14:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/tpswesternregion\/?p=315"},"modified":"2022-09-26T13:25:49","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:25:49","slug":"teacher-librarian-day-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/tpswesternregion\/teacher-librarian-day-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Librarian Day 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-316 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/tpswesternregion\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/476\/2021\/05\/Logo-243x300-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/>The annual TPS-Colorado Teacher Librarian Day was held this year on February 12<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The conference, titled \u201cUnpack the Standards \u2013 Discover Your Story\u201d was a professional development event for Colorado educators that was hosted by <a title=\"Metropolitan State College of Denver\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_State_College_of_Denver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Metropolitan State College of Denver<\/a> in collaboration with <a title=\"Rocky Mountain PBS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmpbs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocky Mountain PBS<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/denverlibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Denver Public Library<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coloradohistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Colorado History Museum<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cde.state.co.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Colorado Department of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this year\u2019s event was to show educators how to integrate primary sources and the new Colorado State Social Studies Standards into their curricula.\u00a0 To accomplish this goal, as well as create an engaging learning environment, we structured the day around the metaphor of taking a trip from the present time back to the mid-1800\u2019s by telling the story of an immigrant family.<\/p>\n<p>We focused on three specific time periods: Global Connections (1945-Present), New Deal &amp; WWII (1929-1945), and Immigration &amp; Industrialization (1850-1929).<\/p>\n<p>The historical context for each time period was viewed through four lenses of expertise: economic, geographic, historic, and genealogic by a panel of experts.\u00a0 The panel consisted of Wendal Cox, PhD, from the Genealogy Department at the Denver Public Library, Rey Hernendez, PhD, Assistant Professor of\u00a0 Economics at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, Thomas Andrews, PhD, Assistant Professor in the History Department at the <a title=\"University of Colorado Denver\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Colorado_Denver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">University of Colorado Denver<\/a>, and Rebecca Theobald, PhD, Assistant Professor Adjoint in the Geography &amp; Environmental Studies Department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.\u00a0 Brenda Barr, PhD, Social Studies Content Specialist for the Colorado Department of Education, then discussed how each of the four historical topics can be integrated with the new standards.<\/p>\n<p>Each historical period was highlighted with examples of clothing and accessories, as well as food specific to each era.\u00a0 This served to enhance the overall learning experience and to show examples of how to use real, as well as digitized primary sources from the <a title=\"Library of Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Library of Congress<\/a>, for effective teaching and learning.\u00a0 Additionally, the conference participants attended breakout sessions designed specifically for their grade level.\u00a0 Master teachers led them through creating curriculum based on the four topics and the new standards.<\/p>\n<p>Meg, a middle school teacher, said at the end of the conference, \u201cI really enjoyed it.\u00a0 I appreciated having the different panel members look at different historical contexts.\u00a0 It\u2019s especially important to bring to students to evaluate the historical perspectives.\u201d\u00a0 Kevin, an elementary school librarian, added, \u201cI\u2019m enjoying the subject of genealogy and following someone all the way through.
