{"id":644,"date":"2021-05-24T17:09:51","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T17:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/tpswesternregion\/?p=644"},"modified":"2021-05-24T17:09:51","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T17:09:51","slug":"capture-the-flag-exploring-the-symbol-of-our-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.msudenver.edu\/tpswesternregion\/capture-the-flag-exploring-the-symbol-of-our-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Capture the Flag &#8211; Exploring the Symbol of Our Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The American Flag has been a symbol of our nation since the adoption of the Flag Resolution in June 1777, being first hoisted in by the Continental Army at the Middlebrook encampment, with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the original 13 colonies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By exploring the various ways people use the American flag through the Capture the Flag primary source album below, elementary and middle school students can learn about abstract concepts through a student-led inquiry-driven classroom activity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resources: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tpsteachersnetwork.org\/album\/45255-capture-the-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Capture the Flag &#8211; Primary Source Album<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tpsconnect.org\/2016\/07\/06\/four-fold-concept-and-vocabulary-building-literacy-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Four Fold Concept and Vocabulary Building Literacy Activity<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Procedure:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create student groups of 3-4 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pass out a different image from the album to each group<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask them to perform a primary source analysis using <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/teachers\/primary-source-analysis-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Observe, Reflect, Question<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Share findings with the whole class<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask them to choose from a list of abstract concepts that you want them to learn about, for example, liberty, freedom, endurance, democracy, or patriotism. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tpsconnect.org\/2016\/07\/06\/four-fold-concept-and-vocabulary-building-literacy-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four Fold graphic organizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, ask them to place the concept they choose in the middle and go through the steps provided.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the last step (Illustrate), either have them use the primary source image you provided and\/or have them illustrate it individually. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an assessment, ask them to write a paragraph stating their findings, defining their concept, and reflecting on the thought process. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Flag has been a symbol of our nation since the adoption of the Flag Resolution in June 1777, being first hoisted in by the Continental Army at the Middlebrook encampment, with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the original 13 colonies.
