Physics 3620 – Getting Started

Textbook Information:

We are using The Physics of Sound, 3rd ed., by Richard E. Berg and David G. Stork for this class. It is required.

You can get this book at the Auraria Bookstore or via any other outlet. We won’t be using any special codes that only come with new texts, so used or rented texts are also fine. That said, ordering your book online should only be done if you are sure you will have it by the time class starts. Being without a book during the first part of the class will definitely hurt you.

Things for you to do in the first week (2 of them):

During the first week of class there are 2 things you need to attend to, both of which can be done before class even starts.

Learning Catalytics Registration (before 2nd class)
  • Learning Catalytics is a web-based classroom response system that we will use daily. You should access Learning Catalytics at https://learningcatalytics.com. Each day in class you will get a SessionID that will connect you to the questions I will ask.
  • Tools: You can use Learning Catalytics with any web-browser on any device. I suggest a smart-phone or tablet as the best choice.
  • Access: Using this service will cost you $12 (for 6 months), which you pay for online using a credit card or PayPal when you register for the service.
  • The website is https://learningcatalytics.com
WarmUp (by 1st Wed.)
  • If you registered for this class after August 14th, 2017 you will need to email me so I can enter you in the WarmUp roster.
  • From the course homepage, or using the link in the sidebar, you can go to the WarmUp website.
  • Log in using your university email address and the password “warmup“.
  • Your first WarmUp will be available Tuesday, August 22nd, starting at 1:00 AM and is due Wednesday the 23rd, at 10:00 PM (sharp!). WarmUps will always be due at 10:00 PM the night before class.
  • At the site, click on Gimme_A_Warmup in the top right to see a list of lessons. The currently active WarmUp is shown on the left in blue.
  • For future reference, clicking “Save” after each question is a good way to make sure you don’t lose your work.
Optional: Join the Remind channel for this class (text reminders)

Simply text “@loats3620” to 81010 on your phone and you will get any text-based reminders that i send out for the class without sharing your phone number with me. You can opt-out of the service anytime.
