Weekly Schedule: Summer 2022 Online sections

Schedule of Weekly Activities Summer 2022

MGT4950: Strategic Management [Online Sections 001 CRN 40165 and 002 CRN 40918]

Please note the following:

  1. This is NOT A SELF-PACED CLASS. You must adhere to the schedule for all activities.
    2. Every student is expected to work on the Simulation Game on their own and with their group.
    3. This course is “front loaded”. It means students will have to begin working hard on the first day of classes. In the first two weeks, please be prepared to work 12 -15 hours on this course due to double the pace in summer.
    4. Student groups can fire non-proactive members at any time during the semester. A student being fired will immediately lose 200 points for group projects and is very likely to fail the class.

Week (ends on Sunday mid-night) Keep track of your progress by checking each item below after completion of Activity / Topic / Chapter
Week 1
Monday, Jun 13 –
Sunday Jun 19, 2022
1)      Make sure you have read the Syllabus and all pages in the Module “Vital Information for MGT 4950”.

2)      You will need to purchase access to The Business Strategy Game Online with a credit card and register using a Registration Code so that you will be placed in the correct “Industry” and “Team”. These codes will be available to you on the first day of class. Use your Metro email ID when registering on the BSG Online web site, so that all messages from the BSG web site will arrive in your Metro email. If you drop the class, you may not get a refund from BSG Online.

a)       Explore the BSG web site. The landing page is the Corporate Lobby.

b)      Begin with the Player Materials link, watch the video and read the document “Recommended Decision-Making procedure”.

c)       Check the “Decision Schedule” of dates for game runs.

d)      Read the Player’s Guide (available in PDF format on the BSG web site).

e)      Every screen has Video Tutorials to help you with BSG Online web site and the Decisions program. Please view every movie, because it gives you a lot more than just explaining the decision entries.

f)        Use the Decisions and Reports program to familiarize yourself with the decision-making screens and try out What Ifs. Again, watch every movie available and read the Help screens.

3)      Team Formation: Students will be placed in teams of three – four each for the Simulation Game on the first day of class. If a team member has not contacted the team by Wednesday, please report the person to the instructor.

4)      Begin reading:
Chapter 1: Strategic Management: Creating Competitive Advantages
Chapter 2: Analyzing the External Environment of the Firm
You will need to submit your HANDWRITTEN chapter notes (You may scan or take a picture of your notes and submit those in a PDF or JPEG format).

5)      Chapter Notes for Chapter 1 are due by Saturday night.

6)      There will be three Multiple Choice quizzes in this class. The first quiz QC123 will be on Chapters 1, 2, and 3. The second quiz QC567 will be on Chapters 5, 6 and 7. The third quiz QC0910 will be on Chapters 9 and 10. There will be 10 questions per chapter, and each question will be worth 4 points. The quizzes are proctored by ProctorU Auto. You will also need to install the ProctorU Extension in your browser. Then click on the ProctorU link before starting a quiz. You will be taken to ProctorU and only then you may click on the quiz link in Canvas so ProctorU can put you through initial checks and start the quiz for you. WHEN TAKING QUIZZES, DO NOT RESIZE WINDOWS OR TRY TO SWITCH WINDOWS. IT WILL BE RECORDED AS AN INCIDENT.

7)      Last Day to drop Full semester classes with 100% refund: Thursday, June 16, 2022.

8)      Business Strategy Game: Continue to practice every day. Communicate with your team members. (A brief reading of “Chapter 5: Business-Level Strategy: Creating and Sustaining Competitive Advantages” of the textbook should be helpful in developing strategies for your company).

9)      Prepare for BSG Quiz 1. On the BSG website, click on the Assignments link, and then on BSG Quiz 1 link. (The quiz does not begin until you click the Start button). You will see instructions about how to prepare for the quiz as well as see three sample questions. Make sure you print out everything you will need to refer to when you take the quiz. Please attempt the three sample questions as preparation for the quiz. In my experience, anyone scoring less than a C tends to receive low Peer Evaluation from their team for lack of preparation for the game.

This form is to be used in the evaluation of presentations and to give feedback / kudos to teams. Each individual member of a team will evaluate the Presentation of the team “next” to them. For example, every member of Team D should evaluate Team E’s presentation (the last Team I should evaluate Team A’s presentation) and provide an evaluation on the Presentations Discussion. Please complete and post these evaluations by Thursday noon. This will allow each team to receive feedback from three or four students in addition to the evaluation from the instructor.

7)      Congratulations to all who completed this class successfully!
