The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Biological Anthropology Association (RMBAA) will take place at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO on September 30, 2023! At the venue, we have reserved a large lecture hall and an adjacent room that will be used for poster presentations.

Professor, University of Northern Colorado
Title: “The Bioarchaeology of Mediterranean Colonies Project: What Happens When Cultures Collide?”
Fernando Villanea, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, University of Colorado Boulder
Title: “Archaic Introgression in Modern Humans: What It Can Tell Us About Archaic Humans and About Ourselves”
- Professional Development Workshop: Applying to and Succeeding in Graduate School, including the following panelists:
- Robin James is a first-year Ph.D. student studying bioarcheology at CU Boulder who is primarily interested in paleoepidemiological research, but loves anything to do with understanding the past through the human skeleton.
- Dr. Steven Leigh is a professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado Boulder and Past President of the AABA. His research focuses on growth and development and microbiomes in human and primate evolution.
- Dr. Caley Orr is a paleoanthropologist who teaches human gross anatomy at CU Medical Campus with a research focus on hominin postcranial morphology and evolution.
Conference Registration
All RMBAA members who are up-to-date on their membership dues for the 2023 calendar year are eligible to attend the Annual Meeting. Our membership dues also cover conference registration, so please visit our membership page to pay your annual dues in order to attend the annual meeting.
New This Year: STUDENT AWARDS!
To further the RMBAA mission of supporting student research, this year we will be awarding a student prize consisting of two nights lodging (Fri & Sat nights) at the YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park for the 2023 RMBAA Meeting! We will award one each to the top graduate and top undergraduate student abstracts in the week following the abstract submission deadline.
Eligibility: To be eligible, the student must be currently enrolled, must be the first author on the abstract, and must present the research in person at the conference. If you meet these criteria, please indicate your interest in being considered for the award on the abstract submission form.
Criteria: Abstracts will be judged based on the scientific value and quality of the submitted work. In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements, a competitive abstract should:
– Clearly describe the concept or problem being tested
– Demonstrate new findings or interpretations that improve our understanding
– Propose new directions based on the research findings

Our meeting venue, YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park, is much more than your typical gym-based YMCA. It is an extensive complex in a gorgeous location, complete with conference rooms and on-site lodging. Our room block at YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park is now full, but other lodging options in Estes Park include Alpine Trail Ridge Inn and Estes Lake Lodge. The Rocky Mountain Biological Anthropology Association requires that all participants at their annual meeting adhere to the American Association of Biological Anthropologists Code of Conduct as outlined on the AABA website.
