Printmaking

The past few weeks have just flown by! There are only 3 more weeks until the end of the year. We are busily, thoughtfully working on our final project of the semester: printmaking. We have learned how to create lino-cuts; it’s where you carve your image into a linoleum block. The prints that this method produces are striking, high contrast images. Once we finish our blocks and start printing, we are going to experiment and make some amazing art for our show at the CVA this summer that coincides with the CVA’s 25th anniversary and celebration on July 17th

Our Trip to Unit-E Gallery!!!

With old friends and new faces, the High school Young Artists took a stroll down Santa Fe Ave. to experience the all female exhibition from local, Denver artists on display at the Unit-E gallery. Missy Heagle, our instructor, is one of the artists with work on display in this show. Her wood-cut prints were well received by our young artists and served as a jumping off point for our students to further their thinking about printmaking, the mode of art making that we are currently undertaking. We spent our time exploring the breadth of the show, taking in the many types of artwork, and  talking in small groups about works that caught our eye. Some students talked about gender identity’s role in artwork; how some of the works looked more feminine than others. After some time, we came together to share our thoughts about individual artworks—the intentions and meanings, the methodologies and media used, and our interpretations and our own meaning-making.
Now we are headed back to the studio to incorporate what we have seen into our work.  We only have a few weeks until our work in exhibited at the CVA!

Last day for “Greater Than the Sum” and “Ah*Sem*Blahj” in the gallery!

The collage exhibition has been up since November and we’ve had many opportunities to look at the work in the gallery, but what have you missed? Take 15 minutes today to go out in the gallery and take another look. What haven’t you seen? What didn’t you notice before? What have you skipped over until today?

Take a moment to sketch a piece you notice for the first time today. Write about what grabbed your attention. Jot down what you think this piece is about. Is their anything you see in this piece that you would like to remember for your own artwork?

MSU Denver BFA Exhibit

These images are from the BFA exhibition. Each of these pieces are part of a thesis for a student at MSU Denver. Their work is really exciting because they are so close in age and have the same perspective on a lot of things as we do.

In Lak’ech

Today we spent some time checking out work in the gallery. Two of the pieces are pictured above. In Lak’ech has artists from California and Colorado. The artists identify as Chicano or address immigration, cultural difference and equality in their work. Some of it was really hard to look at because it showed so much pain but the stories about the border and within the U.S. are important to tell.

See you soon!

Our fall program will begin on September 11.  Please be in touch with any questions.

MSU Denver BFA Exhibition

Art students graduating from MSU Denver host a culminating thesis exhibition.  The work is exciting because it is so new!  We spent the day moving through the gallery and making sketches.

We even had the opportunity to talk with one of the artists about her work and her plans for the future.  Anne took some time to check out our work and gave us some good feedback too.

Super fun and inspiring day!

Collaborate

Picture

Here we are collaborating together for an art piece in the recent exhibition Making Contact.  The work invites the viewer to have a seat, pick a utensil and draw.

monoprints and sacred

Picture

We are studying the work of Frank Buffalo Hyde, among other artists in the exhibition Cross Currents and learning about the idea of sacred. We made monoprints in response.  In these monoprints we used inspiration from places, people, items, happenings that were personal to us that could be likened to something sacred.

Daily Sketchbook

Picture

Everyday in the Young Artist Studio we warm up our minds and get geared up for the projects by responding to a sketchbook prompt.
The prompts or questions are big idea generators that relate to a project or to the artwork in the gallery. Although, sometimes the prompts are unrelated and have a silly spin to them!
