Course Information MTH 1109, Section 1, College Algebra for Calculus

Class time: Lab 8-8:50 Lecture 9-10:15

Required Course Materials:

  •  Online Homework System: MyLab Math for A Graphical Approach to Algebra & Trigonometry, 7th edition, by Hornsby, Lial, Rockswold. Access can be purchased online with a credit card or PayPal. Physical textbook is optional.
  • Graphing calculator: TI-83, TI-83Plus, TI-84, TI-84Plus, or equivalent. Note that calculators which give algebraic answers in closed form (e.g. TI-89) are NOT allowed.
  •  Notebook for class notes
  •  Writing instrument
  • Active participation and a positive attitude!

Accessing homework on MyLab Math:

  • Visit www.MyMathLab.com and sign-up for an account, or login with your existing Pearson account. Use our Course ID to register:

“Midterm” Exams: 

Three “midterm” exams will be given during class and are tentatively scheduled for weeks 5, 10, and 13

Labs:

Each day will be broken up into a 50 min lab followed by a 75 min “lecture.” The intention is to introduce material in the lab that is outside of the scope of the traditional college algebra course. Most of this material is assumed in college algebra (some is beyond what is done in college algebra.)

Labs will generally consist of group work, discussion, and presentation. Attendance is mandatory! 3 absences will result in your grade being lowered by one letter grade, 6 absences will result in a failing grade.

Grades: 

The following grading scheme will be used to calculate your final course grade:

Your final course grade will be no lower than the following:

Important Dates and Holidays:

Withdrawal dates for FULL-TERM courses are:

  •  Last day to drop with 100% Refund: Monday 28 January 2019
  • Last day to drop with 50% Refund: Thursday 7 February 2019
  • Last day for W: Friday 5 April 2019
  • For all full-term and part-term courses, you can confirm your withdrawal dates on your Student Detail Schedule

Holiday Information:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (No classes, campus open)
  • Fall Break: Monday 25 March – Sunday 31 March (No classes, campus open)
