Activity 1.2 Instructor will define some cultural terminology common in FL classrooms and materials  –  “Big C culture” and “Small c culture” and “Products, Practices and Perspectives” and will guide students to distinguish between them using a succession of images Cultures  Grand C et Petit c – and Products, Practices and Perspectives  The ppt/pdf of images is organized to correspond with the following activity guidelines:

In the context of FL classes cultural knowledge is often described in terms of “little c” culture; aspects of daily life, cultural beliefs, behaviors, and values, and “big C” culture, such as literature, art, and institutions. Providing students contact with both types of culture from the target culture(s) can be a first step toward developing cross-cultural competence.(see Teacher Prep 1.1)  The ACTFL Guidelines use the terms Products, Practices and Perspectives.  (See Teacher Prep 1.2)

  1. While seeing examples of “Big C” and “little c” culture and “Products, Practices and Perspectives”, students are asked to distinguish between them using the target language.
  2. Following this, students may be asked to compare the Big C and little c products and practices in the target culture (that they have just seen) and similar categories of products and practices in their home cultures)
