Anti-Racist Online Pedagogy: a reading list
This document started from a desire to identify and share a variety of resources – philosophical, sociological, quantitative, qualitative, reflective, and practical – that can enable educators, specifically white educators, to think critically about their personal and institutional systems, biases, values, and pedagogies with specific attention to the various ways in which racism and White Supremacy are uniquely expressed and perpetuated in the tools, systems, and practices that constitute online teaching and learning. It is my hope that the tools provided here will give educators insight, language, practices, imagination, and hope for creating just, equitable, and inclusive online learning spaces.

Preparing Adjuncts/Affiliates to Teach Online: This has a useful checklist that provides information for teaching folks how to teach online but also for those teaching online.

Open SUNY Online Instructor Training:  This site is a comprehensive online instructor training for instructors who are new to online education. It provides lessons, videos, and up to date information on online teaching. In addition, it connects you with others learning online in a discussion board where you can ask for help, resources and/or offer help and resources. This is a free program that is available to anyone and is completely asynchronous. It is not social work specific.

Hybrid Pedagogy: An open access journal of learning, teaching, and technology.

HybridPod: The HybridPod podcast explores conversations of Critical Digital Pedagogy, listening for ways to empower students and champion learning. It’s hosted by Chris Friend from Saint Leo University. Each episode features interviews with creative pedagogues working in or out of academia, sharing insights and perspectives on how we can enhance learning and teaching in our lives.

Hybrid Teaching Techniques at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. This site share how hybrid teaching is different than online and face to face teaching. Meeting in person and online creates unique opportunities for designing an innovative and  effective course! Visit this site to learn more!

Faculty Focus: Online Teaching: This is a specific track that Faculty Focus highlights about online teaching.

EDUCAUSE: A nonprofit association and the largest community of technology, academic, industry, and campus leaders advancing higher education through the use of IT.

Bias Free Communication:  This article provides concrete examples of how to pay attention to your language and communication in aims of creating a bias free or bias reduced online course.

Sean Michael Morris: Sean Michael Morris is a founder of the Digital Pedagogy Lab, a conference and community that is radically questioning digital spaces and how we learn and teach within them. His blog is inspirational and helpful when learning about online pedagogy. He is also an MSU alumni! Go Roadrunners!

Jesse Stommel: Founded Hybrid journal and is a innovator in digital pedagogy, especially on the human connections in the digital world and the humane treatment of students. Jesse has been to campus numerous times, most recently for TLTS in 2018.

Online Learning Consortium: OLC provides conferences, webinars, and other professional development opportunities.

Online Learning Journal: This journal provides case studies and other research where you can get ideas for your classroom!

10 tips for engaging students in synchronous learning: These tips are published by Faculty Focus. Faculty Focus is a great resource for up to date online and educational practices.

Inside Higher Education Online Learning: Inside Higher Ed provides short articles and news updates on online learning. This will keep you up to date on the state of online learning in higher education.

Digital Literacy: This site is Teaching Tolerance, specifically discussing the importance of digital literacy for students. It is a K-12 website, however it still offers a lot of information pertinent to our students.

Excellent Online Teaching: This is a good source for tips on basic online education. It covers discussion boards and other common issues within online teaching.

Online Learning Consortium Blog: A great Blog from different online educators across the globe.

Best Practices in Online Pedagogy: This is an annotated bibliography of many best practices in online pedagogy.

MSU Center for Teaching, Learning, and Design: This is MSU Denver’s teaching center. They offer training for face to face, online, hybrid, and course design. They also have a great teaching library where you can check out books on all different teaching topics. View their website for upcoming training. CTLD also offers the opportunity to record professional videos for your class in the video studio.

MSU Strong Instructional Practice: This is a site created by MSU teachers. It offers little bits of instructional information that can spark a new practice or just reinforce what you are currently doing! They are short and directly applicable to class!
