Online 101

Social Work Online 101

Description

Instructors who are new to online, have not taken Online 101 with the Social Work Department, or who have and want a refresher will be required to take this basic introduction to online learning within the Department of Social Work before they begin teaching. This required training will include the basic expectations of the department with regard to online instruction, understanding the online student experience, how to build online community, effective communication, how to provide feedback, conducting impactful synchronous sessions, and where to go for help in online teaching and technology needs. A $100 Amazon gift card will be offered to all that participate.

Objectives

  • Faculty will share their expectations and hopes for teaching online and learn the social work department and MSU Denver standards for impactful online and hybrid teaching.
  • Faculty will have a “student experience” in online synchronous and asynchronous   activities introducing them to online education and modeling best practice.
  • Faculty will learn the importance of and how to create online classroom community.
  • Faculty will learn how to use new and effective technology applications and tools in Canvas to foster effective course communication and feedback in accordance with accessibility standards.
  • Faculty will explore and use resources to help them succeed in teaching online for the Social Work Department, such as IT and CTLD support, tech tools, lead faculty and teaching team, SW Online and Hybrid Development Analyst, Online Coordinator and the SW resource site.

Schedule

This training session will be offered twice in Fall and Spring semesters, and once for Summer, including evening and lunch-time options.  If these courses fill, an additional session will be added.  The goal for this schedule is for faculty to complete the 101 training before the semester starts, giving faculty a chance to work on their course in the last week before classes begin, and to allow time for questions and Lead Faculty meetings before classes start.

Please contact Ann or Becky for upcoming dates or check your Digital Dialogue emails.

Online 101 Refresher

Description:

This Online 101 is targeted for faculty who have taught online before and need a refresher regarding our current SW department expectations and standards with online learning.  It is an alternative to the Online 101 and will cover material quicker and with less depth as it is intended that you already have a working knowledge for online learning. If you are a full-time faculty but have not taught online or have limited experience, please enroll in the Online 101 not the Refresher. The training will cover current best practices, updated SW online/hybrid teaching expectations, Canvas expectations and resources, other SW and MSU Denver essential resources for online success, and supporting your non-lead online faculty.

Details:

  • 2-hour synchronous training via Zoom (RSVP Here)
  • Skills practice and tasks to complete asynchronously
  • Please contact Ann or Becky for upcoming dates or check your Digital Dialogue emails.

*For both of these trainings, you will have follow up asynchronous tasks and a knowledge check quiz to complete the full requirements of this training. It is approximately 4 hours of work.
