Welcome to Digital Dialogues!
With the Online Quarantine Queens
As you all move to remote instruction for the remainder of the semester, Ann and Becky wanted to support you through a brief weekly newsletter. We’ll provide some teaching tips you can apply in your classes, and connect you to some curated resources that might be helpful to you as you filter through everything you are hearing about teaching online.
Teaching Tip
Some of you started teaching your class virtually before spring break, but for others, this is your first week connecting with your students online. You can do this! The best thing you can do to make this week successful is to communicate clearly with students about your expectations, and what class will look like. We’ve been hearing from some students that they would like to hear more from their professors; this communication would alleviate some of their anxiety, particularly if they have multiple classes changing format all at once.
Try this!
- Send out a weekly announcement reminding students of class meetings, deadlines, and due dates that are coming up.
- Welcome students back from spring break, and check in with them about how they are feeling about the rest of the semester.
- Reply promptly to student emails. You don’t have to be on call, but should check your email frequently.
- Let students know when you typically check your email, and share your preferred contact information with them so they can reach you when they are worried.
Resources
The Center for Teaching, Learning and Design at MSU Denver is offering weekly Teaching Online Brown Bag sessions designed to support first-time online instruction. These sessions are informal opportunities to learn what other faculty are doing, and to have some discussion around best practices for teaching online.
The sessions will be facilitated remotely, and will be held at noon on the following dates. Feel free check the CTLD calendar and sign up for one or more sessions of interest to you!
