BIO 2320-4 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (3+3)

Prerequisite: BIO 2310 or permission of instructor

This is the second of two courses addressing the structure and function of the human body. Topics include endocrinology; circulation; and the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Course content and class level are designed for allied health science students and for human performance, sport or recreation professions majors.

 

REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS	1.      Seeley’s Anatomy & Physiology, 13th Ed., by Van Putte, Regan and Russo 2. Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual, 12th Ed. – Main version, by Elaine Marieb & Lori Smith

Your books may be e-books or hard copies.  The Van Putte book always stays at home and the green Marieb lab manual needs to come to lab on your lab days. You may reference your books during exams, but time limits how many items you can look up.

Participation Policy

MSU Denver has a new Mandatory Participation Policy for all students. Any student who has not participated in this course by June 18 will be administratively dropped from the course by the Registrar’s Office. Participation for this course means logging into the course on Canvas, participating in a Discussion posting, or signing the attendance sheet in lab.

COURSE FORMAT:

The entire lecture portion of the course is a traditional lecture on campus starting at 9:40 in room Science 1115. The only grades for lecture are the 4 online lecture exams.  No attendance is taken in lecture.  The labs are held on Tuesdays OR Thursdays on-campus in room SI 2089 at 12:30.   Attendance is taken in lab for extra credit points and the 2 lab exams are described below.

Late Work Policy:

1. Lecture and Lab Exams may be taken late at a 10% deduction per day late.
2. Once the semester is over, on Aug 3, no late work is accepted.

Grading Scale: The total number of points possible for the course is 510. Letter grades will be assigned on a percentage basis, as follows:

B	408-458
C	357-407
D	306-356
F	Fewer than 306

 

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Attending lab is essential to success in the class, as it provides visual and tactile input to the structures you need to know as well as relationships of one structure to another.  You may earn extra credit points for attending labs throughout the semester as follows, provided that you are not more than 20 minutes late to any given lab:

Attending fewer than 2 labs: 0 points extra credit

Attending 2 labs: 5 points extra credit

Attending 3 labs: 10 points extra credit

Attending 4 labs: 15 points extra credit

Attending 5 labs: 20 points extra credit

Attending all 6 in-person labs: 25 points extra credit

LECTURE EXAMS:

There will be 4 lecture exams, each worth 100 points (50 questions) for a total of 400 points. All exams are online on Canvas.  Exams open at 12 am on Mondays and close at 11:59 pm on Saturdays on dates above at 11:59 pm.  Lecture exams consist of multiple choice, ordering, matching, true/false questions, and a few fill in the blank questions,  that are randomly selected from a pool of questions. Fill in the blank answers must be spelled correctly. A 10% deduction per day will be taken away from your exam scores for any exams taken and submitted after the due date.  No late submissions once the semester is over. No other make-up opportunities exist.  Exams are not comprehensive.

You will be given one chance to take each exam and a time limit of 50 minutes.  These are open-note, open-book exams, but you may not collaborate with your classmates on any exams.

When you are ready to take the quiz, click on the quiz link, read the instructions, and then begin.  After you have answered all of the questions, click “Submit Quiz” at the bottom.  You will see your score immediately and grades may always be found in the Grades tab on the left of the Canvas course homepage.  There is a practice test that you may try at any time to make sure your web browser is compatible with Canvas and to get familiar with the format. No points are awarded nor deducted for results on the practice test and you may take it repeatedly. I do double check the computer grading on all completed exams.

LABORATORY EXAMS: You must attend traditional on-campus laboratories each week.  The labs will follow the laboratory objectives. There are 2 online lab exams, each with 25 questions, and worth 50 points, 30 minutes.  Questions are only on the material from your laboratory objectives. The Canvas online lab test is primarily fill in the blank questions randomly selected from a test bank and Lab Exam One is due on Saturday July 6 at 11:59 pm; Lab Exam Two is due Saturday August 3 at 11:59 pm.  There is a practice online lab test on Canvas if you wish to check out the format.

STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY: After watching the introductory recording found under Announcements and Overview of the Course Module (read me first), there are questions to answer to make sure you understand course expectations.  The Student Feedback Survey may be found by clicking Quizzes or Assignments on the left Canvas menu.  Due date is June 30 by 11:59 pm. 10 points total are possible.

Student behavior:

1. a) The student assumes certain obligations of performance and behavior while attending MSU Denver. Refer to the student standards of conduct in your Student Handbook.
2. b) Cheating of any sort will result in immediate expulsion with a grade of F.
